Hiya
I have an idea I would like to set up where I live in NZ. I am at the absolute beginning, (as in just had this idea). And I figured, the best place to start would be to find out if what I would like to build, is actually, something that people who are homeless would find useful...
so ideally anyone who is currently homeless, or has been homeless, can help me here. Also anyone who works with the homeless...
i have been recently making all sorts of great things using free pallet wood. As part of my learning for this I have seen the tiny home concept which is basically making very small compact houses. Much smaller than yor average house or apartment, but also specially designed to be that small.
i have been keen to try building a small buildng using mostly pallet wood, which is free here and easy to come by. So i thought...
for those who are homeless, whatever the reason, in the city near me, what about building some small basic 'tiny homes', finding a sponsor to provide some land near the city on which to put them, then offering them rent free to those who need a place, short or longer term.
then asi was thinking further about this and all the logistics, pros and cons and so on,I thought, why not make it something more than just a charity or hand out, and instead make it a community, where everyone who comes, is welcomed, and expected to contribute. Not contribute by some sort of soul sucking drudgery that they hate, but whenver possible, residents contribute by using their skills or by getting involved in things that they are passionate about.
So for example, a resident might move into a tiny home, and be into building and carpentry, so decide to use the free pallet ood on site to extend their single dewlling into something suitable for a family, or to build some outdoor furniture or large shelter for community meetings. Mor maybe they are an elctrical tradesman or have some trades work experience, and could help set up 12volt solar systems on the homes... Or maybe they have been dealing with addiction and are in a position to help by counselling others who are ready to quit but havent yet. Or maybe they have been homless for many years and have some practical advice to offer those newly homeless and feeling scared and unsure. There could also be gardens to grow vegies and fruit used by everyone, maybe a group going out fishing for communial fish meat (or a community cook out), musicians providing a weekly live entertainment evening, people doing general admin (or those interested in computinn or admin getting trained at the same time as they help out with community admin tasks. Maybe some could set up a creche to allow others to work or job hunt. And maybe others still could come to me or other community leaders and pitch their own idea.
In my ideal world i see a large space which is donated, and lots of tiny homes on it. And some abulutions (communial cooking and toilet/showers). A place that welcomes all as long as they are willing to contribute what ever skills and ideas they have. A place that maybe starts off as an idea that I have, and some sponsors have... But eventually becomes a sort of self sufficient, volving community where the growth, the new ideas and the expansion and building of the homes, is all being driven by the people who live there. So in the long term my role is more a sort of facilitator, of a community which is run, and grown by its members.
i feel that many of the existing systems to 'help' the homeless, are a bit condescending. They either just offer handouts. Or they have limited ways recipients can contribute, usually non silled jobs' attendance on generic 'job search' , budgeting, nor addiction type courses which arent really addressing the participants as people.
The followin may sound q bit wanky, or a bit disney optomistic, but...
Id like be able to offer some real practical help to people, who need it without being judgemental. And at the same time, both expect, and offer them the chance to contribute in a meaningful way so they dont feel that they are uust getting a handout, or doing some stupid pointless, obviously compulsory welfare job for a benefit. I think eveyone, has something to offer, and id love to see a place where people can get real useful help AND be able to contribute by using their own ideas and strengths so that whatever they do, they do not because its acompulsury job, but more as a project they are personally passionate about.
so, for anyone homeless reading this... If you were living in my country, this is sort of what I envisign offering. Tell me what yo think?
some sort of large hopefully park like (and if not then lets get community members into horticulture tree planting and landscaping) large property, scattered with small tiny homes.
you rock on up, wanting a place to stay.
i eithe say, yup cool there is a space home, come have a look...Hiya

some sort of large hopefully park like (and if not then lets get community members into horticulture, doing some tree planting and landscaping) large property, scattered with small tiny homes.
You rock on up, wanting a place to stay.
I either say, "yup cool there is a spare home, come have a look..."
or, if we are full up, I say
"I'd love to offer you a place but they are all full. Tell u what? We have plenty of wood and materials, Come stay in our communial tent while you build yourself a tiny house......
You Don't know how? No worries, we have residents who can show you what to do, as long as you are willing to put in the time?
Come on in tonight, I'll take you over to our temporary bunk house tent and you can sleep there tonight. I'll send 'Bob' over to see you at 7am tomorrow, you guys can pick a site, work out what you want, and then get started, if you do 8 hr days you should have a place in approx a week. Till then you crash in the communal tent. Once you have built your home, come see me and we can discuss what jobs you could help out with or any ideas you have for the community."
So then you and any stuff you have are taken to either a free tiny home, or a spot in a large tent.
Your tiny home is very small, you probably cant even stand up in it. It has a bed, storage space, and maybe solar lights to see at night. It has four walls, and a roof you can lock the doors so your stuff is safe. Its yours and only yours (or your partner/family) so its tiny but it is YOUR space. You wont share it with strangers. And if you need it, we will sort out sheets and blankets/duvets etc. it might already have some painting or art, from other tenants. If not, and you have some ideas on how to do it up, you can approach community leaders. As long as your ideas are not going to offend anyone we will probably be happy for you to go ahead and put a personal touch on your space.
You can stay as long as you like. Rent is free. But you need to contribute your skills, ideas or time. If you are unwell and not capable of working physically, you can still stay. If you have a full time job, you can help out after hours or in weekends, or your partner/ family can help out while you work. If you are physically unfit, there are probably other ways you can help, maybe advise on things you have experience with, or maybe, companionship.
You will be expected to be involved in the community and contribute not just time and labour but also ideas.
So this is my vision. Id love to hear feedback from anyone who is or has been homeless or who knows or works with homeless. If you are homeless yourself, or have been, is this a place you would have wanted to come and stay?
What problems can you see and do you have any ideas on how to deal with them? For example, what if there are people who have problems with drugs and alcohol' mental health issues, or anger problems. Is there a way that they can be welcomed and able to join and contribute, while at the same time minimising the risk of their issues causing problems for other residents, or anyone living near the community'. In nz there is plenty of options for people to object to community residential projects like this, so it would also be a case of not giving the neighbours even the tiniest reason to make waves with local authorities.
My hope is that by creating a community were everyone who lives there is actively involved in creating, and growing that community, and given the respect they deserve for their contribution, that the people who live there will see it as their own home, and will want to make it a place that is peaceful for those living there, and out of personal pride might want to make it a place that never gives even the grumpiest of neighbours a single reason for complaint.
Ie they feel that it is their own place and see the work they do in the same way a new home owner might see the time they spend renovating their new home.
So in my vision, there are few problems, because the people living there, even if they come from a history of violence or addictions etc, are personally invested in the place, they want it to be seen in a good light by others in the nearby community and its a matter of personal pride for them to show their community at its best. Also, those who do join the community with issues that need dealing with, are identified, and quckly helped out, by other community members who have been there themselves. Ie rather than some counsellor who someone might feel has no idea what it is to walk in their shoes, telling them what to do, its someone who has been there, done that and has the scars to prove it, who is, out of personal pride and a passion for change, approaching anyone who has issues like drugs/alcohol, mental health issues needing treatment, or anger/violence issues.
Maybe i am dreaming with my head in the clouds. But i want it to be a place where anyone in any situation can come and first of all, receive practical, useful realistic help such as a place to stay, food to eat, and a place to belong. But secondly be able to get any help they need to make long term changes. And then from there, be ready, passionate, and willing, to give the same help to the next person who rocks on up needing a place to stay. Again, a place where Im not running everything, but more, facilitating and overseeing a community that starts to grow and become something of its own accord, from the people who it starts out by helping.
I think we all have experiences, ideas, skills and thoughts to offer, but many of us think we don't. So as well as offering practical, no bull%$&@ help, i would love to build a place where people can grow or heal themselves even as they help others. Why have a whole lot of 'qualified' people (who may have no real idea what its like to actually be homeless, or deal with addictions or other issues, being paid to try and solve some of these problems they have no actual experience of). Why pay for that, if we can have people with real life experience, who have already started to conquer these problems themselves, volunteering their time for free, to show others the way?
Also, i think everyone, even those who might claim otherwise, does, deep inside, want or even need to feel that they are a valuable person with something useful and needed to contribute. Im tired of seeing government agencies treat those people whose battle scars probably qualify them far more than any degree, as if they have nothing to contribute and as if they are simply a burden on others.
I want to help build a place where people can find real, useful non patronising help. And then give back as much or more than what they receive.
Sooooo..... What do people think? If my vision became a reality, would YOU want to be involved? And if so, how do you see yourself joining in, what skills, experience, or attitude do you have. Or what skills and experience would you love to learn then how would you give back to the community using what you learnt?
I am really hoping to get some honest, and inspiring feedback and ideas from people who are or have been homeless to help me get started.
Thanks in advance
If anyone wants to communicate more in depth and you have an email addy I can reach you at, pls include that in your reply and ill drop you a line.

Your tiny home is very small, you prob cant even stand up in it. It has a bed, storage space, and maybe solar lights to see at night. It has four walls, and a roof you can lock the doors. And if you need it, we will sort out sheets and blankets/duvets etc.
