Im from nz but I think I saw a doco on the jungle (not on the clear out, someone was doing a doco for youtube on the people living there.)
Anyway. It seemed like there was an interesting mix of funny, intelligent and straight up people staying there, who were all getting along pretty well and managing things in a pretty civilised way, all things considered. I also cant figure out what reason the authorities might have to evict them? If its the place I saw in the doco, they are well away from any residential or business buildings, and not doing anyone any harm.
And why the hell is homelessness considerd a criminal activity, ever, by anyone? That idea just makes me angry by its sheer stupidity... As though a whole lot of people all woke up one day and said, lets just have no home, bugger all possessions, lets go live rough with no facilities or normal comforts..... Just so we can be baddies and break the law.... I mean hello? Do they think homeless are actually people with half a dozen places to live that just decided to live rough for the fun of defying the authorities?
And assuming the powers that be have enough clue to work out that most people aren't homeless out of choice.... In what alternate dimension are they living where someone should be penalised and criminalised for having the bad luck to be in an already horrible situation?
Honestly, when i read that there are authorities in supposedly free and civilised '1st world' countries who not only do nothing about the fact that people are living without basic necessities, but actually have the ridiculous audacity to even consider criminalising poverty...... I cant help but ask myself whether, if this is how we treat others of our kind, the human race deserves to exist at all
